1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?  The preferred reading of a media text is when the producer picks and chooses how they want their audience to view the media text. 2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text? An oppositional reading of a media text    when the audience rejects the preferred reading, and creates their own meaning for the text .  Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown: 3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film? the harry brown trailer positions the audience to perceive the teenage characters as threats, emphasising societal issues like youth crime and gang violence and aggressive. 4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer? young people might see the trailer differently, relating to the teenagers struggles or feeling the portrayal is one sided or stereotypical. Look at this McDonald's advert: 5) Write a 150+ word analy

Industries: Ownership and Control

  1) Why did Facebook buy Instagram for $1bn? He wanted to keep his company, and to keep being the Instagram visionary, just with none of the risks of independence. Facebook's network was already helping Instagram grow — and if Instagram was part of Facebook, they'd have unimaginable resources to keep growing, faster. This argument seemed to appeal to Systrom. 2) What are the benefits for media companies of vertical integration? Vertical integration may lead to  lower transportation costs, smaller turnaround times, or simpler logistics  if the entire process is managed in-house. This may also result in higher quality products as the company has direct control over the raw materials used through the manufacturing line. 3) What are the benefits for media companies of horizontal integration? Undergoing horizontal integration can benefit companies and typically takes place when they are competing in the same industry. The advantages include increasing market share, reducing competi

Audience Effects Theory

  1) Write a definition of a   passive  audience:  An audience that is exposed to media/marketing material but doesn't actively engage with the content or messaging . 2)  Write a definition of an  active  audience:  Active is  when an audience is engaging, interpreting, and responding to media messages and are able to question the message .  3) Write a definition of the  hypodermic needle  theory:  The Hypodermic Needle theory is  a linear  communication theory  which suggests that a media message is injected directly into the brain of a passive, homogeneous audience .  4) Write down a  media product  (e.g. TV show, newspaper or video game)   for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and  WHY  it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:  INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE:  The Times newspaper  > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more. PERSONAL IDENTITY:  > Why:  the audien

Blog Learner Response/Feedback

First 10 Questions: EBI- You need some more detail in your answers, for instance where you are talking about The Grinch you were supposed to write a whole paragraph talking about why the target audience would be interested / entertained and you have just said 'it is acceptable for all' with no detail about film. 'Child protected' is not correct - you mean Universal rating as in suitable for every age group. But you need to be specific about WHAT about this film interests families and children.  Your font changes a lot - can you make sure it is consistent and the same colour and type? Literacy - you say that you want a grade 6-7 but you don't write in formal language with simple things like capital letters for film titles and correct punctuation! Proofread as there are a LOT of typos which just looks lazy!  Mise-en-scene: WWW: You are using some observation skills using all the aspects of CLAMPS  EBI- You are not writing in nearly enough detail for GCSE level. When

DEMOGRAPHICS AND PSYCHOGRAPHICS

  1) What information do media companies use to create a demographic profile of their audience?   -Media companies create the audiences profile by using their age, gender, education, social class, race/ ethnicity, job/ profession/ earnings, home (city/ village, countryside). 2) Why are media companies and advertisers increasingly using audience profiling and not just demographics?   -Media companies and adversities use audience profiling and not just demographics because they need to include their hobbies and interests, they need to determine where the audience can get their marketing resources. They also use audience profiling to get to know the customer better and to have a greater access on their profile. 3) What psychographic group or groups do  YOU  belong in? Think about your own interests and lifestyle and explain your decision. Remember, you may fit into two or three different groups!   -I feel like sometimes I belong to the straggler as I always rely on my emotion/ feelings th
